Midlife Transits Calculator: Uranus Opposition & Pluto Square Dates

Free midlife transits calculator: the exact dates of your Pluto square, Neptune square, Uranus opposition and Saturn opposition, every pass solved from the Swiss Ephemeris, with your age at each.

What this calculator computes

From your birth date, time and place it finds the natal positions of Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn and Chiron, then solves every moment across your life when each planet reaches the angle that defines a midlife transit. You get every exact pass dated to the day, your age at the first pass, how many passes each transit has, which of them overlap, and your Saturn return and Chiron return on either side. Positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris. Nothing is read from an age table, because for these transits an age table is only right for one generation.

The four midlife transits

Each is a slow planet reaching a hard angle to where it stood when you were born.

  • Pluto square Pluto: read as a reckoning with power and control, and with what you built your life on. Median age 38.2, but from 35.5 to 52.3 depending on your generation.
  • Neptune square Neptune: read as disillusionment that clears the way for a truer sense of meaning. Age 39.5 to 42.1, median 40.7, the same for every generation.
  • Uranus opposite Uranus: read as the midlife turning point, the pull to stop performing a life and start living your own. Age 38.0 to 44.5, median 42.8.
  • Saturn opposite Saturn: read as the halfway audit between your two Saturn returns, a test of whether your commitments still fit. Age 42.7 to 45.4, median 43.8.

Your generation decides your Pluto square

Pluto takes about 248 years to circle the zodiac and its orbit is strongly stretched, so it crossed Scorpio in about 12 years (1983 to 1995) and took about 32 to cross Taurus (1851 to 1884). How long it takes to travel 90 degrees from its place in your chart therefore depends on where it started. Median age at the first exact pass, by birth year:

  • Born 1950 to 1959: 39.2, falling to 37.8.
  • Born 1960 to 1974: 36.8, 35.9 and 36.1, the youngest of any living generation.
  • Born 1975 to 1984: 36.9, rising to 38.8.
  • Born 1985 to 1994: 41.3, rising to 44.6.
  • Born 1995 to 2000: 48.5, rising to 51.0. For this generation the Pluto square arrives after the other three, not before them.

How many passes, and for how long

A slow planet usually crosses the exact degree, turns retrograde and crosses it again, then turns direct and crosses it a last time.

  • Pluto square: three passes 69.3%, five passes 30.7%, never one. Median 309 days from first pass to last, longest 628.
  • Neptune square: three passes 73.5%, five passes 26.5%, never one. Median 306 days, longest 593.
  • Uranus opposition: three passes 95.3%, one pass 4.7%. Median 290 days.
  • Saturn opposition: one pass 50.8%, three passes 49.2%. Median 261 days when there are three.

How the four overlap

The whole sequence, from the first exact pass of the first transit to the last exact pass of the last, takes a median of 7.1 years: 80% of charts fall between 4.9 and 8.9 years. The first pass arrives at a median age of 38.2 and the last at 44.8. Counting a transit as in progress from sixty days before its first pass to sixty days after its last, 69.2% of charts have two in progress at the same time at some point, 8.1% have three, and 22.6% never have more than one.

How to use your dates

Look first at which transit is in progress or next, and treat its window as scheduled work and not as an ambush. With three passes, the first usually raises the theme, the retrograde pass brings it back for a second look, and the last closes it, so large decisions made in a hurry at the first pass are often revisited. Where two transits overlap, expect the themes to arrive together. The house each planet occupies in your birth chart shows which part of life it runs through, which is why a birth time sharpens the reading even though it barely moves the dates.

Before and after: the wider sequence

The midlife transits sit between two other landmarks. Your first Saturn return, at about 29, is the entry into adult structure that the midlife transits later question. Your Chiron return, at about 50, is read as the chapter after midlife: what you do with what these years taught you. The second Saturn return follows at about 58 to 59. The calculator shows all of them on one timeline, and each has its own calculator here with every pass dated.

How the census was run

One birth every fifteen days at 12:00 UT from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2000, 1,242 in all. For each, the natal positions were computed and every exact pass of each transit was solved inside a fixed age window (Pluto square 30 to 66, Neptune square 36 to 45, Uranus opposition 36 to 48, Saturn opposition 41 to 48) with the same crossing solver this calculator uses. Births were treated as evenly spread in time. The grid is fixed, so rerunning the script reproduces every figure on this page.

Questions

What are the midlife transits in astrology?

Four slow planets each reach a hard angle to their own position in your birth chart within a few years of each other: Pluto square Pluto, Neptune square Neptune, Uranus opposite Uranus and Saturn opposite Saturn. In 1,242 births we ran through this calculator, the first of them arrived at a median age of 38.2 and the last finished at a median age of 44.8.

When is my Uranus opposition?

Enter your birth details above for your exact dates. Across births from 1950 to 2000 the first exact pass fell between age 38.0 and 44.5, with a median of 42.8, and it depends on when you were born: about 39 for people born in the early 1950s, about 44 for people born in the 1980s. 95% of Uranus oppositions come in three exact passes spread over about ten months.

What age is the Pluto square?

It depends heavily on your generation, because Pluto moves much faster in some signs than others. Median age at the first exact pass by birth year: 1950-54 39.2, 1960-64 36.8, 1965-69 35.9, 1970-74 36.1, 1980-84 38.8, 1985-89 41.3, 1990-94 44.6, 1995-99 48.5, 2000 51.0. The often quoted "Pluto square at 36" is right for people born around 1970 and wrong by a decade for people born in the late 1990s.

When is my Neptune square?

At about 40 to 41 for everyone. Neptune moves at an almost constant speed, so the first exact pass fell between age 39.5 and 42.1 in every birth we ran, with a median of 40.7. 73.5% of Neptune squares have three exact passes and 26.5% have five.

What is the Saturn opposition at 44?

Saturn takes 29.5 years to circle the chart, so it stands opposite its birth position at about 14 to 15 and again at about 44, halfway between your first and second Saturn returns. The midlife one fell between age 42.7 and 45.4 in our census, with a median of 43.8. About half come in a single pass (50.8%) and half in three (49.2%).

How long do the midlife transits last?

From the first exact pass of the first transit to the last exact pass of the last, the median is 7.1 years; 80% of charts fall between 4.9 and 8.9 years, and the longest we found was 13.7. Each single transit with several passes takes about ten months from first pass to last: a median of 309 days for the Pluto square, 306 for the Neptune square, 290 for the Uranus opposition and 261 for the Saturn opposition.

Do the midlife transits happen at the same time?

Usually two of them do. In 69.2% of charts two of the four are in progress at the same time at some point, in 8.1% three are, and in 22.6% they arrive one after another with no overlap. The calculator tells you which you have.

Is the midlife crisis real in astrology?

Astrologers read these years as a scheduled reassessment, not a breakdown: Pluto questions what you have built your power on, Neptune what you believed, Uranus who you have been performing as, and Saturn whether your commitments still fit. Astrology describes timing and themes. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for medical or psychological care.

Can I find my dates without a birth time?

Yes. These planets move so slowly that the time of day changes your natal positions by a few arc minutes at most, which usually moves a pass by no more than a few days. The calculator casts a noon chart and still dates every pass.

Can ChatGPT calculate my Uranus opposition or Pluto square?

Not reliably. A language model has no ephemeris, so it cannot place the outer planets on a given date or find when one of them reaches an exact angle, and it tends to answer with the textbook age for a different generation. It can interpret the transits well once it has your solved dates, so calculate them here first.

What comes after the midlife transits?

Your Chiron return at about 50 (between 48.5 and 50.9 in our Chiron census), then your second Saturn return at about 58 to 59. The calculator shows both, along with your first Saturn return at about 29, so you can see the midlife transits in the sequence they belong to.

How accurate are these dates?

Each pass is found by stepping the planet through your life and bisecting the moment it reaches the exact angle, then shown to the day. Your local birth time is converted with the timezone of your birthplace, including daylight saving on that date. One limit: two passes that fall within a few days of each other right at a retrograde station can be shown as a single pass.
