Each of the twelve signs belongs to one element and one modality. The calculator lists every planet in your chart plus your Rising sign, tallies the elements and the modalities, and takes the leader of each. Those two qualities meet in exactly one sign: fire and fixed is Leo, water and mutable is Pisces, air and cardinal is Libra. The full tally is shown so you can see how close the second element or modality came, because a tie means a second signature is one placement away.
The Sun sign describes your core; the signature describes the operating style the whole chart runs through. When they agree there is little gap between who you are and how you come across. When they differ, the signature is usually the first impression and the Sun is what people find once they know you. The reading that follows the calculation starts there: what the first impression costs, and which placement pulls against it.

The element with the most placements and the modality with the most placements combine into one sign: fire plus cardinal is Aries, earth plus fixed is Taurus, and so on. Because your Sun is one placement out of eleven. A Leo Sun in a chart full of earth and cardinal placements signs as Capricorn. When the two differ, people tend to meet the signature first and find the Sun later.
The ten planets count without it. The Rising sign is the eleventh point and needs your birth time; without it the calculator counts the planets only and says so.
