A retrograde planet in a birth chart is one that appeared to be moving backward through the zodiac at the moment of birth. In traditional reading, the planet's function turns inward: it works privately, reviews before it acts, and often matures later than the same planet moving direct. Mercury retrograde at birth is read as thinking that circles before it lands; Venus retrograde as love and self-worth reviewed from the inside first; Mars retrograde as drive turned inward into strategy and stamina. None of these are flaws. They describe where your chart insists on a second look.
The distinction that makes this page honest is speed. Mercury, Venus and Mars are fast, so their retrograde windows are short and being born inside one is uncommon: 19%, 7% and 9% of births respectively, and about 32% of births carry at least one. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are slow, retrograde for 30% to 44% of every year, so a slow-planet retrograde is shared by a large slice of everyone born in the same months. An all-direct chart is the genuinely rare result: only about 11.5% of births have none of the eight classical planets retrograde, rarer than any single retrograde. It reads as directness, with every planetary function expressing outward first and getting examined afterwards. This calculator answers that directly from your exact birth date, time and place: it computes the speed of Mercury at that minute with Swiss Ephemeris and reports it as retrograde when the motion was backward. Mercury is retrograde in about 19% of births, roughly one in five, so it is common enough to be shared and rare enough to be personal. Venus retrograde at birth is the rarest of the personal planets at about 7%, and Mars sits near 9%.
Counting the eight classical planets from Mercury to Pluto, about 11.5% of births have none retrograde, 22% have one, 23% have two, 22% have three, and 15% have four. Five or more is under 7% of births. The outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are each retrograde for 30% to 44% of every year, so most people carry at least one slow-planet retrograde; it is the personal planets, Mercury, Venus and Mars, that make a natal retrograde feel individual.
The Sun and Moon never appear retrograde from Earth, so they are not counted. The lunar nodes move backward by definition, so they are left out too. Chiron is shown on the page because it does turn retrograde (about 40% of the time) but it is kept out of the "of eight" count, which covers the classical planets only. The rates on this page come from sweeping every day from 1940 to 2030 on the same ephemeris that casts your chart, not from a quoted figure.
