What essential dignity measures
Essential dignity is the fastest read on how strong a planet is by sign alone. A planet in its own sign acts with natural authority; one in the opposite sign has to work against the grain. This calculator scores each classical planet on the four major sign-based dignities using the traditional weights — domicile +5, exaltation +4, detriment -5, fall -4 — and totals them for a whole-chart dignity score.
The four essential dignities
A planet is in domicile when it occupies a sign it rules — fully at home. It is exalted in a sign that honours it like a valued guest. It is in detriment in the sign opposite its domicile, and in fall in the sign opposite its exaltation, both of which are uphill placements. A planet with none of these four has no major sign dignity here — a full traditional scheme also weighs the minor dignities of triplicity, term, and face, but these sign-based dignities are the strongest single indicator.
How to use your dignities
Lead with your dignified planets — they are where your chart operates from ease. Read the debilitated ones not as flaws but as deliberate practice; a planet in fall often becomes a hard-won strength precisely because it was never automatic. Always weigh dignity alongside the planet's house and aspects, which can support or complicate the raw score.
Questions
Why only the seven classical planets?
The traditional dignity scheme was built for the seven visible planets, Sun through Saturn. The modern outer planets — Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — have no traditional rulerships, so this calculator leaves them out.
Does a planet in fall mean something is wrong?
No. A planet in detriment or fall simply works against the grain of its sign, which often builds real skill the hard way. It is a growth area, not a defect.
