What this Human Design calculator computes

You enter a birth date, an exact birth time and a birthplace. The calculator returns the full bodygraph and everything read from it. Nothing is estimated from your Sun sign or your birthday alone.

  • Inputs: birth date, exact time and birthplace. The timezone, including historical daylight saving, is resolved from the birthplace coordinates.
  • Engine: Swiss Ephemeris positions for the Sun, Earth, Moon, North and South Node, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
  • Two casts: the Personality at your birth moment and the Design at the moment the Sun stood 88 degrees of arc earlier, solved from the ephemeris.
  • Output: 26 activations by gate and line, your defined channels, defined and open centers, Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, Definition, Signature, Not-Self theme and Incarnation Cross.
  • Cost: free, with no account needed to see the chart.

How a Human Design chart is built

The zodiac is divided into 64 gates of 5.625 degrees each, one for every hexagram of the I Ching, and every gate into six lines of 0.9375 degrees. The wheel is anchored with Gate 41 beginning at 2 degrees of Aquarius. Each of the 13 bodies lands in one gate and line at birth (the Personality, the conscious side, black on a traditional bodygraph) and in another about three months earlier (the Design, the unconscious side, red on a traditional bodygraph). When both gates at the two ends of one of the 36 channels are active, from either side, that channel is defined, and the two centers it connects become defined. Everything else in the chart follows from which centers are defined and how they connect.

The five Types, with measured shares

We ran 53,328 random birth moments, two for every day from 1940 to 2012, through this exact calculator and counted the results. The widely repeated Type percentages have no published method behind them; these do.

  • Generator, 35.9%: a defined Sacral with no motor connected to the Throat. Strategy: wait to respond. Signature: satisfaction. Not-Self theme: frustration.
  • Manifesting Generator, 32.7%: a defined Sacral and a motor connected to the Throat. Strategy: respond, then inform. Signature: satisfaction. Not-Self theme: frustration and anger.
  • Projector, 21.5%: no defined Sacral and no motor connected to the Throat. Strategy: wait for the invitation. Signature: success. Not-Self theme: bitterness.
  • Manifestor, 8.9%: no defined Sacral, with a motor connected to the Throat. Strategy: inform before you act. Signature: peace. Not-Self theme: anger.
  • Reflector, 1.1%: no defined centers at all. Strategy: wait a lunar cycle of about 28 days. Signature: surprise. Not-Self theme: disappointment.

Your birth year moves the odds

The outer planets hold one gate for months or years, and both the Personality and the Design cast pick them up, so whole birth years lean one way. When two slow planets sit at the two ends of one channel, nearly everyone born that year has it. About 730 births were sampled for each year, so yearly figures carry a few points of sampling error.

  • 1972: every sampled birth was a Generator or Manifesting Generator, because the 34-57 channel was defined in 99% of births that year, which defines the Sacral.
  • 1982: 99% Generators and Manifesting Generators.
  • 1990: 49% Projectors, more than twice the long-run share. 1963 came close at 46%.
  • 1988: 33% Manifestors, nearly four times the long-run share.
  • Long run, 1940 to 2012: 68.5% Generators and Manifesting Generators, 21.5% Projectors, 8.9% Manifestors, 1.1% Reflectors.

Authority: what you decide from

Authority is assigned by a strict order of precedence over your defined centers. A defined Solar Plexus always wins, then the Sacral, then the Spleen, then the Heart, then the G center. A chart with none of those defined but with definition above the Throat has Mental authority, and a Reflector has Lunar authority.

  • Emotional (Solar Plexus), 50.6%: no truth in the moment. Decide after the emotional wave has passed.
  • Sacral, 33.1%: the gut response, yes or no, in the present.
  • Splenic, 9.3%: a quiet instinct that speaks once and does not repeat itself.
  • Self-Projected, 2.8%: hear what you say when you talk a decision through.
  • Mental, also called Environmental, 1.9%: decide by sounding it out with trusted people in the right surroundings.
  • Ego, 1.3%: what you truly have the will for.
  • Lunar, 1.1%: Reflectors wait through one full cycle of the Moon.

Profiles: six common, six rare

Your Profile is two numbers: the line of your Personality Sun and the line of your Design Sun. Because the Design Sun always sits 88 degrees behind the Personality Sun, and 88 degrees is 93.87 lines, the second number usually follows from the first. That makes 1/3, 2/4, 3/5, 4/6, 5/1 and 6/2 common, at 14.3% to 14.6% of births each and 86.7% together. It makes 1/4, 2/5, 3/6, 4/1, 5/2 and 6/3 rare, at 2.2% to 2.3% each and 13.3% together, because they occur only for births in the last eighth of a line. If you have one of the rare six, your birth time matters more than most: a shift of two or three hours can move you to the common neighbor.

Centers and Definition

A defined center is consistent in you; an open center takes in and amplifies the people around you. The average chart has 4.7 of nine centers defined, 3.5 defined channels and about 20 active gates.

  • Most often defined: Throat 70.3%, Sacral 68.5%, G center 60.3%, Root 58.6%, Spleen 58.4%.
  • Least often defined: Head 24.3%, Heart 35.8%, Ajna 44.9%. The Solar Plexus is defined in 50.6% of births.
  • Definition: Split 46.1%, Single 40.9%, Triple Split 11.2%, Quadruple Split 0.6%, none 1.1%.
  • All nine centers defined: 0.4% of births, one in 250. No centers defined, the Reflector: one in 92.

How to read your result

Start with Type and Strategy, because they describe how life is meant to reach you: by responding, by invitation, by informing, or by waiting out a lunar month. Then read your Authority, which is how you make a decision that is correct for you once something has arrived. Your Signature tells you what alignment feels like, and your Not-Self theme is the early warning that you have left it. Profile describes the role you play over a lifetime. Centers, channels and gates fill in the detail, and the Incarnation Cross describes the theme the whole chart serves. Human Design asks you to test all of this as an experiment in your own life, not to take it on faith.

How the census was run

Two birth moments were drawn at a uniformly random minute for every calendar day from 1 January 1940 to 31 December 2012, 53,328 in all, and each was cast with the same service that calculates your chart here. Human Design uses no houses, so the birthplace only sets the clock; every sample was cast in UTC. Births were treated as evenly spread over the day and the year, which real births are not quite. The random seed is fixed, so rerunning the script reproduces every figure on this page.

Questions

What is Human Design?

Human Design is a self-knowledge system set out by Ra Uru Hu in 1987. It combines the planetary positions of astrology with the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching (the 64 gates), the Kabbalah Tree of Life (the 36 channels) and the chakra system (the nine centers) into one diagram called the bodygraph. From it you read your Type, the Strategy that goes with it, your inner Authority for decisions and your Profile.

What does this Human Design calculator compute?

From a birth date, exact time and birthplace it computes 26 activations: the Sun, Earth, Moon, both lunar nodes and the eight planets at birth (Personality) and again at the moment the Sun was 88 degrees of arc earlier (Design). Each position becomes a gate and a line. From those it derives your defined channels, your defined and open centers, your Type and Strategy, your Authority, your Profile, your Definition, your Signature and Not-Self theme, and your Incarnation Cross by angle and its four gates. Positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, and the timezone is resolved from the birthplace, not from your device.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes, for a chart you can trust. The Moon changes line about every 1.7 hours and changes gate about every 10 hours, and the Sun changes line about every 23 hours, so a birth time that is a few hours off can move your Profile, complete or break a channel, and with it change your Type or Authority. A few minutes rarely matter unless you were born right at a line change.

How is the Design date calculated?

The Design side of the chart is cast for the moment the Sun was exactly 88 degrees of ecliptic longitude before its position at your birth. That is not a fixed 88 days: the Sun moves faster in January than in July, so the gap runs from roughly 86 to 92 days. This calculator solves the moment from the ephemeris to within a millionth of a degree instead of subtracting a fixed number of days.

What are the five Human Design Types and how common is each?

In 53,328 random birth moments from 1940 to 2012, run through this calculator, 35.9% were Generators, 32.7% Manifesting Generators, 21.5% Projectors, 8.9% Manifestors and 1.1% Reflectors. Generators and Manifesting Generators together, the two Types with a defined Sacral center, are 68.5% of births.

What is the rarest Human Design Type?

The Reflector, who has no defined centers at all: 1.1% of births in our census, about one in 92. The Manifestor is second rarest at 8.9%. The rarest full combination we counted was the Projector with Ego authority, at 0.4% of births.

What is the difference between a Generator and a Manifesting Generator?

Both have a defined Sacral center and both wait to respond. A Manifesting Generator also has a motor center (Sacral, Heart, Solar Plexus or Root) connected to the Throat through defined channels, which adds the Manifestor ability to move fast and the need to inform others before acting. This calculator checks that connection through every defined channel, not only direct ones.

What is inner Authority and which one is most common?

Authority is the part of the chart you are meant to decide from. It follows a fixed order of precedence. In our census 50.6% of births had Emotional (Solar Plexus) authority, 33.1% Sacral, 9.3% Splenic, 2.8% Self-Projected, 1.9% Mental (also called Environmental), 1.3% Ego and 1.1% Lunar, which belongs only to Reflectors.

What is the rarest Human Design Profile?

Six Profiles are common and six are rare. 1/3, 2/4, 3/5, 4/6, 5/1 and 6/2 each account for 14.3% to 14.6% of births. 1/4, 2/5, 3/6, 4/1, 5/2 and 6/3 each account for only 2.2% to 2.3%. The reason is arithmetic: the Design Sun sits 88 degrees behind the Personality Sun, which is 93.87 lines, so its line lands two ahead of the Personality line about 87% of the time and three ahead only when you were born in the last eighth of a line.

What do Single, Split and Triple Split Definition mean?

Definition describes whether your defined centers form one connected circuit or several separate ones. In our census 46.1% of births had Split Definition (two groups), 40.9% Single Definition, 11.2% Triple Split, 0.6% Quadruple Split and 1.1% none (Reflectors). Splits are often read as the places where other people tend to bridge you.

Which centers are most often defined?

The Throat (70.3% of births) and the Sacral (68.5%), followed by the G center (60.3%), Root (58.6%), Spleen (58.4%), Solar Plexus (50.6%), Ajna (44.9%), Heart (35.8%) and Head (24.3%). The average chart has 4.7 of the nine centers defined, 3.5 defined channels and about 20 of the 64 gates active. All nine centers defined is rare: 0.4% of births, one in 250.

What is an Incarnation Cross?

Your Incarnation Cross is formed by four gates: the Personality Sun and Earth and the Design Sun and Earth. Its angle follows from your Profile: Right Angle for 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6 (64.5% of births in our census), Left Angle for 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 (33.3%), and Juxtaposition for 4/1 alone (2.2%). This calculator names your cross by its angle and its four gates.

Can ChatGPT or another AI calculate my Human Design chart?

Not reliably. A language model has no ephemeris, so it cannot place the Sun, Moon and planets at your birth moment or solve the Design date, and it may still state a Type with confidence. It can interpret a chart well once the placements are computed. Calculate your chart here, then give the assistant your Type, Authority, Profile, defined centers, channels and gates.
