Questions

What is a chart shape in astrology?

A chart shape is the overall pattern your ten planets make around the zodiac wheel. Astrologer Marc Edmund Jones grouped these into seven types — Bundle, Bowl, Bucket, Locomotive, Seesaw, Splash, and Splay — based on how tightly or widely your planets are spread. The shape describes how your energy is distributed and where it naturally wants to focus, before you even look at individual signs.

How is my chart shape calculated?

This calculator takes the exact longitude of all ten major planets from your birth chart, sorts them around the 360-degree wheel, and measures the gaps between them. The largest empty gap and the span your planets occupy determine the pattern — for example, all planets inside a 120-degree trine is a Bundle, one empty half is a Bowl, and a lone planet opposite a full bowl is a Bucket. You'll need an accurate birth time for the most precise result.

What do the leading planet and handle planet mean?

In a Bowl or Locomotive, the leading planet is the first planet clockwise after the big empty arc — it acts like the cutting edge that drives the whole pattern forward. In a Bucket, the handle planet is the single planet sitting opposite the main group, and it becomes the focal point that all the chart's energy funnels through. Both are powerful pressure points to understand in your chart.
