An anaretic degree is the 29th degree (29 degrees 00 minutes to 29 degrees 59 minutes) of any zodiac sign, the final degree a planet can hold before it changes signs. It is often called a fated or crisis degree: the energy feels time-pressured and urgent, as if you are being asked to finally master this lesson rather than keep repeating it. This calculator flags any planet whose degree within its sign is 29 or higher.
Critical degrees are specific degrees, tied to a sign's modality, where a planet's expression is amplified and feels fated. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) have critical degrees at 0, 13, and 26. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) at 8-9 and 21-22. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) at 4 and 17. A planet landing on (or within one degree of) one of these gets heightened, exaggerated emphasis in your chart.
It is a completely valid and often reassuring result. A chart with no planets on anaretic or critical degrees tends to express its energies more evenly and steadily, without a single high-voltage placement demanding constant attention.
