Welcome to the Getting Started guide! This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to start your journey inward.
Think of this guide as gentle recommendations, instead of strict guidelines.
Each person uses Drift Inward differently, and there is no correct way of starting out. However, if you follow this guide from beginning to end, you'll experience most of what Drift Inward has to offer, and then some more.
Let's begin.
TLDR
-
Start in Journal to clear your mind and set intent
-
Review your Insights and Journal Report
-
Switch to Meditate → Create to generate a tailored session (your journal is automatically used as context!)
-
(Optional) Try Deep Hypnosis when you're in a calm, private space
-
The more you journal, the more personalized everything becomes
1) Journal First, Then Create
If nothing on the main interface catches your attention enough- maybe the meditation sessions when you click on sessions aren't relevant right now, or, the breathwork sessions aren't what you're looking for (hint: the breathwork sessions are animated, just have patience and follow the instructions, keep your eyes open!)- this means the journal is the best place to begin.
Switch to the journal mode by clicking on Journal as shown below -

Journal Entry
Write an entry in your journal.
If at any point, you don't know what to write, tap the slash key (/) to bring up the slash menu, choose reflect, and it'll come up with something relevant to nudge you along.
Finish writing
Once you finish writing the journal entry, click on the Journal Report button to see a detailed report of your journal.

This is different from the realtime insights (the button beside it on the toolbar, which shows you insights as you keep typing).
Your Journal Powers Everything
Here's the magic: Drift Inward automatically learns from your journal entries. You don't need to manually add entries as context - the system extracts meaningful facts and insights from what you write.
This means:
- AI meditations are automatically personalized based on your goals, emotions, and life context
- Guide chat responses understand your journey and what you're going through
- Tarot and Astrology readings connect to your actual lived experience
- The more you journal, the more deeply personalized everything becomes
You can manage what the system remembers in Settings → Personal Memory, where you can view, edit, or remove any learned memories.
2) Create a Meditation
Return to Meditate and click Create at the center of the Living Dial.
Your details
-
Name
-
About you : Add anchors you want referenced in sessions (identity, values, priorities- anything you'd like your practice to remember).
What to ask for
Type a plain-language request. Examples:
-
"Create a meditation that helps me focus and work steadily for 45 minutes."
-
"Create a meditation to help me relax after a long day."
-
"Create a meditation that helps me let go of worrying about X."
You don't need special phrasing. Write it the way you'd say it.
Because the system already knows what you've journaled about, your meditation will automatically be tailored to your current state and goals - no extra steps needed.
3) Deep Hypnosis (Optional)
Use only when:
-
You're in a calm, quiet, interruption-free space
-
You can sit or lie down safely for a longer session
Deep Hypnosis sessions are longer and can guide you into a deeper trance state, so avoid using them while commuting, multitasking, or when you might be disturbed.
Should you upgrade to try deep hypnosis?
If you're curious about self-hypnosis, yes- exploring it now builds skill as the tech evolves. It isn't "perfect," but it's already powerful for many users.
